Attach Handrail to Brackets

From Install Outdoor Handrail · Step 7 of 8 · Video by Optimum Works Inc.

Showing 2:44–4:28 of the source video.

What happens in this clip

With the brackets loosely installed, carefully lift the handrail and place it onto the brackets, aligning it with the marked chalk line. It is highly recommended to have an assistant to help hold the handrail firmly in place during this step. Once the handrail is resting securely on the brackets, use the self-tapping screws provided to fasten the handrail to each bracket. If you find it difficult to apply enough pressure for the self-tapping screws to bite into the metal handrail, pre-drill a small pilot hole through the handrail material (using a drill bit 1/16 inch smaller than the screw diameter) before driving the self-tapping screw. Ensure all screws are fully tightened, making the handrail sturdy and secure.

Goal: Permanently attach the handrail to the installed brackets

About the full video

This project provides a step-by-step guide on how to install a handrail on a staircase. The process involves accurately marking the handrail's height and angle, locating wall studs for secure bracket placement, drilling pilot holes, and then fastening the brackets and handrail using appropriate screws or bolts. An alternative method for securing brackets using drywall anchors when studs are not accessible is also demonstrated.

Step 7 of 8: Attach the Handrail to Brackets

Carefully place the handrail onto the brackets, ensuring it aligns with any pre-drilled holes or mounting points on the rail and brackets. Use the screws or bolts recommended by the handrail manufacturer to fasten the handrail to each bracket. Tighten all connections firmly but avoid overtightening, which could strip threads or damage the handrail.
