Cut Openings for Fixture Boxes

From Recessed Staircase Lighting · Step 4 of 8 · Video by Around The Home

Showing 3:50–4:15 of the source video.

What happens in this clip

Carefully cut out the marked openings for the new light fixture electrical boxes using a utility knife. It's crucial to make the cut snug but not overly tight. If the hole is too tight, forcing the box in can crack the drywall. If it's too loose, the box won't be secure. Use a utility knife to lightly score and snap the drywall, or carefully trim if necessary, to achieve a precise fit.

About the full video

This project provides detailed instructions on how to upgrade a bathroom's lighting by replacing a single, old wall-mounted light fixture with two new, hardwired wall-mounted fixtures. It covers marking the layout, cutting drywall, installing electrical boxes (new work for the main junction, old work for fixtures), running new electrical wiring, making connections, and reinstalling drywall sections.

Step 4 of 8: Cut Fixture Openings

Using a template provided with the light fixture or by measuring precisely from your markings, trace the outline of the fixture on the wall surface. Carefully cut along the traced line using a drywall saw or oscillating multi-tool. Be precise to ensure a snug fit for the light fixtures. Avoid cutting into existing wiring or plumbing within the walls.
