Prepare Base and Install Stair Stringers

From Deck Stairs · Step 1 of 8 · Video by C.L.S. ALL-IN-ONE

Showing 5:20–6:48 of the source video.

What happens in this clip

Before installing the pre-made stair stringers, it's essential to prepare a solid, non-dirt base to prevent direct contact with the ground, which can lead to rot and instability. Dig out a shallow trench in the dirt where the bottom of the stairs will rest. Lay concrete pavers in this trench, ensuring they are level and at the correct height to support the stair stringers. Once the pavers are level, the pre-made stair stringers (purchased from a home improvement store) can be positioned on top of them. The presenter uses three stringers: one in the middle and one on each end. These stringers are toenailed into the top deck frame using screws, driving them at an angle to secure them.

Goal: Provide a concrete base for the stairs and attach the stringers to the porch frame.

About the full video

This project details the process of replacing old, sloped concrete steps that cause negative drainage towards a house foundation with a new freestanding wooden porch and steps. The project involves demolishing the existing concrete structure, setting concrete deck blocks for a stable foundation, constructing the wooden base frame and posts, installing the deck boards and stair stringers, building stair treads, and finally adding the top and side railings with uprights, ensuring all components are level and securely fastened.

Step 1 of 8: Prepare the Stair Location

Clear vegetation, debris, and any obstacles from the ground where the base of the deck stairs will rest. Ensure the ground is level and compacted to provide a stable foundation for the stringers. If the ground is soft, consider adding a layer of gravel or concrete pavers for better support.
