Install Railing Rails and Balusters

What happens in this clip
With the railing posts in place, you can now install the horizontal rails and balusters. Measure the distance between each set of railing posts. Cut 2x4 lumber to these lengths for the top and bottom rails. These rails will support the balusters. For consistent baluster spacing, you'll need to do a calculation. Measure the inside width between the railing posts. Add the thickness of one baluster to this measurement. Divide this sum by the minimum required baluster spacing (e.g., 4 inches) plus the thickness of one baluster. Round this result up to the nearest whole number to get the total number of balusters for that section. Then, divide the original inside width by the number of balusters to get the precise spacing. To easily maintain this spacing during installation, create a 'spacer' block from a scrap piece of wood, cut to the calculated spacing. Place the spacer between each baluster as you install them. Attach the balusters by counter-sinking a hole and adding a screw to both the top and bottom rails. Repeat this process for each railing section.
