What happens in this clip
Begin the excavation process by digging a series of step-like terraces along the slope. Start from the lowest point of your chosen area and work your way up. Each step should be roughly 5 to 6 inches deep to accommodate the 4x6 lumber. A useful tip is to mark the 5.5-inch depth on your pickaxe handle to maintain consistency as you dig, ensuring even tiers for the subsequent lumber placement.

Step 2 of 8: Excavate for First Step
Excavate the area marked for the first step. The depth should be sufficient to accommodate the timber depth plus a few inches for drainage and compaction. Create a level base for the timber to rest on. Dig a trench where the retaining timbers will be placed, ensuring they will be flush with or slightly below the final desired step height.
