Install Metal Balusters and Caulk

What happens in this clip

With the wooden elements painted and dry, begin installing the metal balusters. Insert the metal rods into the pre-drilled holes in the handrail and base. Ensure they are correctly oriented and spaced. Secure each metal baluster by drilling a pilot hole into the ends that meet the wood, then fastening them with screws. Use a level to ensure all balusters are plumb and properly aligned. Finally, apply a bead of caulk around the top and bottom where the metal balusters meet the wood, as well as around the base of the newel post, to seal any gaps and create a clean, finished look. Smooth the caulk with a wet finger or tool. Any caulk that gets on painted surfaces can be carefully wiped away or painted over for a seamless finish.

Step 5 of 6: Install New Balusters

Apply a strong adhesive suitable for metal and wood to the ends of the wrought iron balusters, or use appropriate mounting brackets and screws as designed for the baluster system. Position each baluster in its designated spot on the railing and stair stringer, ensuring it is plumb (perfectly vertical). Hold in place until the adhesive sets or secure with fasteners. Repeat for all balusters, maintaining consistent spacing.
