With the stencil securely mounted, you are ready to paint. Pour your desired paint into a tray or shallow container. Dip a flat-tip stencil brush into the paint, then immediately dab the excess paint off onto a lint-free cloth or paper towel until the brush is nearly dry. This dry-brush technique is crucial for preventing paint from bleeding under the stencil and for achieving the desired aged, 'old world' look where the wall color shows through. Using a gentle dabbing or stippling motion and a light touch, apply paint to the open areas of the stencil. Be careful not to apply too much paint, especially at the very ends of the stencil where your pattern will eventually continue, to avoid creating a visible overpainted seam. Continue painting until the pattern is filled in, but still allows the underlying wall color to subtly show through. Once you're satisfied with the paint coverage, carefully lift one corner of the stencil and slowly peel it away from the wall.
