Apply Wallpaper and Smooth

From Stair Riser Wallpaper · Step 3 of 6 · Video by Ultimate Paper Mache

Showing 4:19–5:01 of the source video.

What happens in this clip

Once the stair riser has been prepped with paste and the wallpaper is ready, the wallpaper is carefully placed onto the riser. A dry chip brush is then used to smooth out any air bubbles, working from the center outwards. To further ensure complete adhesion and remove any remaining air pockets, the presenter firmly presses the entire surface of the wallpaper onto the wood with her hand, making sure it is 'smack up right against' the wood. The video shows the initial results, indicating a significant improvement despite the treads still being unfinished.

Goal: Achieve a smooth, bubble-free, and securely adhered wallpaper finish on the stair risers.

About the full video

This DIY project details how to reface old, worn stair risers using paintable textured wallpaper. The process emphasizes using a homemade stair tread gauge to achieve accurate angle cuts for the wallpaper and applying an additional adhesive to ensure strong, lasting adhesion. The goal is to revitalize the appearance of the stairs without major reconstruction.

Step 3 of 6: Apply Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Peel back a small portion of the backing paper from the top of the cut wallpaper piece. Align the top edge of the wallpaper with the top of the stair riser, ensuring it is straight. Slowly peel away the backing paper while pressing the wallpaper onto the riser, smoothing out any air bubbles with a squeegee or your hands as you go. Trim any excess material at the edges with the utility knife.
