Step 5 · Apply Protective Topcoat

Once the final coat of paint or gel stain is completely dry, apply one to three thin coats of a clear protective topcoat, such as polyurethane or a polycrylic finish. Use a high-quality synthetic bristle brush for application. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly between applications, and allow the final coat to cure for the time recommended by the manufacturer before use.
