Install Handrail Brackets (Wood Studs)

Measure the height of your handrail material (e.g., 1 inch as shown). From the chalk line previously marked on the wall, measure down this height and make a light mark. This mark indicates where the top edge of your bracket will align. Using a stud finder, carefully locate the vertical studs within the wall along the handrail's path. Mark the center of each stud where a bracket will be placed. Position a handrail bracket against the wall, aligning its top edge with the mark you made below the chalk line, and centering it over a detected stud. Mark the screw holes of the bracket onto the wall with a pencil. Using an electric drill and a pilot hole drill bit that is 1/8 inch smaller than the diameter of your wood screws/bolts, drill pilot holes at the marked locations. Finally, insert the wood screws or wood bolts through the bracket and into the pilot holes, securing the bracket to the wall. Do not fully tighten the screws yet; allow the bracket to swivel slightly.
