Install Vertical Battens with Spacer Blocks

Once the spacing is calculated, cut a piece of scrap wood to the exact length of your calculated spacing; this will serve as your spacer block. Begin by cutting the first vertical batten to the correct height (from the top trim piece down to the baseboard). Place this first batten, usually in a corner, and use a level to ensure it is perfectly plumb (straight vertically). Secure it to the wall by nailing every 6 to 8 inches. For added security, you can apply a bead of wood glue or construction adhesive to the back of the batten before nailing. Then, use your custom spacer block to position the next vertical batten. Slide the batten into place against the spacer block, ensuring the top is correctly aligned. Use the level again to verify plumb, and then nail it into place, checking the bottom alignment as well. Repeat this process along the entire wall, using the spacer block to maintain consistent gaps.
