Stair Tread Installation
Step 2 of 7

Step 2 · Measure for a Custom-Made Look
To get that beautiful, seamless appearance, accurate measurements are key. Use a measuring tape to find the depth (from the front edge, or 'nosing,' to the back 'riser') and the width of a wooden stair. Transfer these measurements to the back of a carpet tread. Pro Tip: Marking the tread just slightly smaller than the stair itself ensures a clean fit without any buckling. If your treads have a pattern, double-check your alignment before marking.
Measure multiple treads as slight variations can occur.

General Hazard
Do not measure and cut all treads at once; measure and cut each one individually to account for any differences in stair dimensions.
