What happens in this clip

To ensure accurate and consistent placement of each stair tread, the homeowner uses blue painter's tape to mark the desired position on the hardwood steps. A measuring tape is used to confirm precise spacing and alignment, ensuring a symmetrical reveal of the wood on both sides of each tread. This meticulous marking helps maintain a uniform and professional look across the entire staircase.

About the full video

This DIY project demonstrates how to transform existing hardwood stairs by installing custom-made, peel-and-stick stair treads. The process involves measuring and marking the optimal placement for each tread and landing piece, carefully applying the adhesive-backed treads to protect the wood, and enhancing the overall safety and aesthetic of the staircase.

Step 2 of 4: Mastering Depth: Your Guide to Accurate Tread Measurement

Now for the depth – a critical measurement for that custom-made to fit feel. For each tread, gently place the end of your rigid tape measure against the vertical riser at the very back of the step. Carefully extend the tape straight out, right over the front rounded edge (we call this the nosing). The key here is to keep your tape perfectly flat and level across the tread's surface. A crucial safety and quality tip: always measure directly on the bare tread material. Measuring over old carpet, existing flooring, or adhesive will give you inaccurate results, compromising the perfect fit of your new treads. Take your time and record the depth for every single step.
