Step 3 · Measure the Tread Width

Now it's time to measure the width. Run your tape measure across the front of the tread from one side to the other, keeping it parallel to the riser at the back. If your stairs are between two walls, measure wall-to-wall. If one or both sides are open, measure the full width of the wooden step. For a classic, professional look, most homeowners leave about a 1-inch border of exposed wood on each side. For example, a 36-inch wide stair is perfectly suited for a 34-inch tread. This design choice helps bring warmth and elegance to your home. Don't forget to record the width for each step.
