Step 3 · Measure the Tread Width
Let's find the right width for that perfect fit. Measure each tread from left to right, keeping your tape measure parallel to the back of the step. If your stairs are enclosed by two walls, measure the full width and then subtract 2 inches (for a 1-inch border on each side). If one side is open, measure from the wall to the open edge and subtract 1 inch. This small border is a designer's touch that helps elevate your staircase and showcases the beautiful wood beneath.
Standard residential treads leave about a 1-inch space on each side for a clean bordered look.
