Step 2 · Step 2: Measure the Depth of Each Tread
Let's measure the depth, which is the distance from front to back. Place the end of your tape measure firmly against the vertical riser (the back of the step) and extend it straight across the tread until it's just over the rounded front edge, known as the 'nosing'. It is crucial to keep the tape measure flat against the wood surface. Measuring over existing carpet, old adhesive, or uneven surfaces will throw off your numbers and affect the final fit. Write down the depth for each and every step.
