Step 2 · Measure Each Stair Tread Individually
Work your way up the staircase, one step at a time. For each individual tread, use your flexible tape to measure the width across its widest point, which is usually the outer edge. Next, measure the depth from the very front of the tread (the 'nosing') to the back. Finally, use your protractor or angle finder to determine the curve angle. Taking these measurements from the same points on every step is key to achieving consistency and peace of mind.
Visualize the staircase like a fan — wider on one end, narrower on the other — and embrace that every tread is individual.
Every tread must be measured individually; don't assume they're identical, and use a flexible tape to follow the curve.
Always measure from the same point on each step to maintain consistency in your measurements.

General Hazard
On curved stairs, the depth can change as the curve tightens towards the center.
