measure stairs for bullnose treads
Step 1 of 3

Step 1 · Measure the Total Tread Depth Over the Bullnose
Start by placing a straightedge flat on the stair tread, pushing it flush against the vertical panel at the back (this is called the riser). Now, use your tape measure to measure from the back of the tread, forward over the curved 'bullnose,' to the very front edge. This single measurement is crucial because it tells us exactly how much material is needed to hug that curve perfectly, ensuring a secure fit and a clean look.
Ensure the straightedge is held firmly in place to get an accurate measurement.

General Hazard
Do not just measure the flat part of the tread; the measurement must include the rounded nose projection.
