install treads on a curved staircase
About This Guide
Do you have a beautiful curved staircase but worry about slips or how to find treads that fit its unique shape? You're not alone! The solution is simpler than you think. This guide empowers you to install our handcrafted wool, natural fiber, or synthetic stair treads for a perfect, custom-made fit. Because each step on a curved or 'winder' staircase tapers uniquely, precise templating is the key to achieving that professional look. We'll walk you through creating a perfect template for each wedge-shaped step, ensuring your new treads bring warmth, elegance, and safety to your home.
Steps
Gather Your Templating Tools
To guarantee a flawless fit for each unique tread, it's essential to have the right tools on hand. A flexible measuring tape is perfect for following the stair's curve, while a protractor or angle finder helps capture the precise angle of the turn. You'll also need a level for accuracy. For the templates themselves, simple cardboard or kraft paper and a pencil are all you need to trace the exact shape of each step.
Measure Each Unique Step with Care
Start by measuring the width of the step at its widest point, which is usually the outer edge. Let your flexible tape follow the curve for an accurate reading. Next, measure the depth from the front edge (we call this the 'nosing') to the back where it meets the riser. Use your protractor or angle finder to capture the curve's angle. A crucial tip for success: always measure from the same reference point on every step. This consistency is what ensures your new treads will look uniform and beautiful.
Create and Label Your Custom Templates
This step is where The Oak Valley Difference really shines. Lay your cardboard or paper over a step and carefully trace its exact shape, making sure to include the curve of the nosing. Cut out the traced shape to create your template. The most important part: clearly label each template with its step number (e.g., 'Step 1,' 'Step 2,' etc., starting from the bottom). This ensures each custom-made tread will be crafted for its specific place on your stairs. Once you have a labeled template for every step, photograph them and send them with your order. This process guarantees the peace of mind that comes with a perfect fit.
