I want to replace the carpet of 15 stair steps with a landing and turn at step 13. Steps are 35 1/4" wide.
About This Guide
Tackling a staircase with a landing and a turn can seem complicated, but it's a wonderful opportunity to elevate your home's style and safety. This guide will walk you through the simple, DIY-friendly process of measuring for a beautiful, seamless installation. The secret is to treat your landing as a separate, custom-made piece that coordinates with your stair treads. With a few careful measurements, you can achieve a professional-looking result that brings warmth and elegance to your home, ensuring your stairs are safer, more stylish, and built for everyday life.
Steps
Measure Your Landing Platform
The most important rule for a successful project is to remember that your landing is a unique platform, not just an oversized stair tread. You must measure it as its own custom piece. Start by measuring the landing's total width and length. If your landing area includes a turn or angle, simply divide it into smaller rectangular sections and measure the width and length of each part. This precision ensures your custom-made landing will fit perfectly. For safety and design, also confirm your landing is at least as wide as the stairs and has a minimum depth of 36 inches in the direction of travel.
Measure Your Individual Stair Treads
With the landing measured, let's move to the stairs themselves. This part is straightforward. For each step, measure the width from side-to-side and the depth from the back (riser) to the front edge (nosing). Even if your steps look identical, it's a great pro-tip to measure each one and number them. This accounts for any slight variations and is a hallmark of a truly custom-made-to-fit project. For your staircase, you'll be measuring for a 35 1/4" width on each tread.
Place Your Custom Order
You're now ready to bring your vision to life! When placing your order with Oak Valley Designs, you'll enter the landing as a separate custom-sized item using the platform measurements you took. Then, you'll order the treads based on your individual step measurements. The most important part of this step is to select the same beautiful, high-quality material and color for both the landing and the treads. This is what creates that seamless, professionally designed flow that will elevate your staircase from functional to stunning.
Install Your Landing Piece First
It's time for the installation! Always begin with your custom landing piece. Think of it as the foundation that ensures the alignment and balance for the entire staircase. By setting and securing the landing first—using our simple 'Clean, peel, and stick' method—you create a perfect edge for the stair treads to meet. This critical first step guarantees that the treads running up and down from the landing will have a clean, gap-free connection.
Install the Stair Treads
Once your landing is securely in place, you're on the home stretch! Proceed with installing your custom stair treads. Whether you work from the landing upwards or downwards, the goal is the same: align the edge of each tread perfectly with the piece next to it. For the upper flight of stairs, the bottom of the first tread should meet the top edge of the landing carpet precisely. This meticulous alignment is the key to achieving that beautiful, continuous look that embodies 'safety meets style' and gives you peace of mind.
