how to measure winder or pie-shaped stairs for carpet stair treads
About This Guide
Winder steps, those charming angled wedges that gracefully turn your staircase, are a unique design element. Unlike straight steps, each winder demands individual attention and precise measurement to ensure your carpet stair treads fit perfectly. This guide empowers you with the knowledge to accurately measure these distinctive steps, ensuring a beautiful, custom fit for your home. We'll also cover essential safety and walkability dimensions, giving you peace of mind.
Steps
Clearly Identify Your Winder Stair Treads
Start your DIY journey by carefully observing your staircase. You'll want to distinguish the winder steps from the standard straight treads. Winder steps are easily recognized by their angled, wedge, or 'pie' shape – they'll be noticeably narrower on the inside of the turn and wider on the outside. Standard rectangular treads will be measured using our conventional method. It's crucial to flag only these uniquely shaped winder steps for individual, precise measurement. Keep in mind that no two winder steps are necessarily identical, so a bespoke approach is key to achieving that custom-made to fit look.
Precise Width Measurement for Each Unique Winder
With your tape measure in hand, meticulously record the length of the narrowest edge (typically the inner curve of the turn) and the widest edge (usually the outer curve) for each identified winder step. Once you have both measurements for a single winder, calculate their average. This average will be the specific width dimension for that particular winder tread. Additionally, make sure to record the absolute smallest width you measure across all your winder steps, as this will be your crucial base ordering measurement for a consistent look and feel. This attention to detail ensures your custom-cut treads will truly elevate your staircase.
Determine Depth and Ensure Safety with Code Verification
For each winder step, measure the depth from the very front edge to the back edge at its deepest point, ensuring your future tread will offer full coverage. After establishing the depth, it's absolutely essential to verify critical code dimensions for stairSafety and walkability. Confirm that the narrowest point of the winder tread measures a minimum of 6 inches. Next, visualize an imaginary 'walk line' situated 12 inches in from the narrow edge of the tread; measure the depth of the tread along this specific line, ensuring it is at least 10 inches. To maintain consistency and safety, also check that the largest tread depth at the walk line doesn't exceed the smallest tread depth at the walk line by more than ⅜ inch. Lastly, for overall peace of mind, verify that the riser height (the vertical space between steps) does not exceed 7¾ inches. These checks are vital for families with children or pets and ensure your stairs are built for everyday life.
Submit Your Measurements for Custom-Fit Treads
Because every winder step is uniquely shaped, providing detailed documentation is key to The Oak Valley Difference. Take clear, well-lit photographs that truly capture the layout and angles of your winder steps. These photos will be invaluable to our team, helping us visualize your unique staircase. Alongside these images, provide all the precise measurements you've diligently recorded: the narrow edge width, the wide edge width, the calculated average width, the smallest base width, the maximum depth, and the depths at the walk line for each individual winder step. This comprehensive information ensures your custom-made to fit treads will be cut with pinpoint accuracy, bringing warmth and elegance to your home and making your stairs safer, more stylish, and built for everyday life.
